General Presale Questions
  • What exactly is web hosting? I thought that's what my Internet Service Provider (ISP) provided.

Web hosting is what makes a web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs do host a few personal web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee. However the address, or URL, is subordinate to the ISP; for example, it might look like this: www.friendlyisp.com/username. A company like Uniquely Yours provides web hosting on a server independent from an ISP, so we can host a web site with a proper domain name. In that case the URL could be www.yourdomainname.com.

  • What is a domain name? What is an IP?

A domain name is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. A domain name must be unique. Internet users access your website using your domain name. IP is the abbreviation for "Internet Protocol" and is the "address" of a device attached to an IP network (TCP/IP network). Every client, server and network device must have a unique IP address for each network connection (network interface). IP addresses can be shared by several domain names. Think of like an apartment building. The building is the web server and the address of the building would be the IP address. The names on all the mail boxes for that building would be the domain names being hosted on that server.
